Aliona Masangcay
The ocean is known to us humans as an endless enigmatic body of water. It has been something we admire and adore, something that we seek to understand more of. The ocean is ours to celebrate and protect, however humans fail to acknowledge the damage that has been done and will continue to prevail.
Through a multidisciplinary practice of film, sound and performance, Masangcay’s work aims to evoke a turbulence of emotions, creating a blanket of comfort and peace that eventually descends into a cacophony of chaos and disaster. The sounds that construct the piece are crafted with a haunting melody that reverberates to embrace the viewer in an immersive atmosphere.
Through performance art, a message of urgency and a plea for change flows through the movements and sound of the film. In hopes for a better response and encouragement for change alongside action, Masangcay hopes that her work can touch the hearts of the audience.

This multidisciplinary piece was created to highlight the lack of action and attention given to pollution in the ocean. Masangcay’s performance piece is brought to life with a cacophony of sounds through recordings of water. The soundtrack has been manipulated to sound haunting and uncomfortable as the performance progresses. This work begins with a calm atmosphere that quickly accelerates into destruction and chaos as the consequences of pollution become apparent. By ignoring the damage that has been caused and will continue to pollute the oceans, an irrevocable silence settles.
